Treatment for Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic Neuropathy Is a Peripheral Nerve Disorder Caused by Diabetes or Poor Blood Sugar Control

The most common type of diabetic neuropathy results in problems with sensation in the feet. It can develop slowly after many years of diabetes or may occur early in the disease. The symptoms are numbness, pain, or tingling in the feet or lower legs. The pain can be intense and require treatment to relieve the discomfort. The loss of sensation in the feet may also increase the possibility that foot injuries will go unnoticed and develop into ulcers or lesions that become infected. In some cases, diabetic neuropathy can be associated with difficulty walking and some weakness in the foot muscles.

Compounding Offers Many Alternative Topical Treatments That Can Combine Highly-effective Medications to Treat Your Unique Conditions.

At MYERS Medical, we're able to produce a variety of treatments that can help alleviate your foot pain and increase circulation to reduce numbness and improve feeling, stability and balance. We typically incorporate the following medications, and can prepare creams with any combination of these active ingredients, up to 25% of the total content.

  • Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant. It affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. It is used alone or in combination with other medications. It is commonly used orally for neuropathy.
  • Ketamine is an anesthetic medication. It acts at the NMDA receptor site for use in treating neuropathy.
  • Ketoprofen is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). it works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body, and is often used to treat pain or inflammation caused by arthritis.
  • Lidocaine is a local anesthetic (numbing medication). It works by blocking nerve signals in your body. It is applied topically to numb the skin, or lessen pain.
  • Nifedipine is in a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It relaxes (widens) your blood vessels (veins and arteries), improving circulation
